Second Step® Middle School

Overview

We understand how busy life can be for middle school staff, so we’ve broken down the training into a flexible series of short learning experiences that can be completed prior to each unit. The Training section of the program includes two sets of program training materials: Unit Quick Start Guides for lesson instructors, and customizable presentations for school leaders to use with their staff.

Training Materials

For lesson instructors:

In the Unit Quick Start Guides, lesson instructors will familiarize themselves with key concepts, the program’s research base, and teaching strategies. Each Quick Start Guide is unique to each grade and unit. Lesson instructors should watch the Quick Start Guides before teaching each unit.

For schoolwide implementation:

For principals and other building leaders who are tasked with leading the schoolwide implementation of Second Step Middle School, there are four customizable presentations for training staff. Each presentation has a specific purpose and is designed to be delivered at a certain time during the school year. All presentations include slide scripting to make facilitation as easy as possible.

Because each school’s implementation is unique, customization of these presentations is required. Slide notes indicate where facilitators need to add information prior to presenting. By using these presentations as touchpoints throughout the school year, school leaders ensure that social-emotional learning remains a priority for their students and staff.

The four customizable presentations are:

  1. Staff Overview
  2. Responding to Bullying and Harassment
  3. Mid-Year Check-In
  4. End-of-Year Check-In
